Episode 5 Rewind | Exterior Face-Off

#RockTheBlockColorado is almost coming to a close and this week's focus was on the exterior of each home!

Very High Drone 2022

This week on Rock the Block, each HGTV team finalized their home exterior, backyard and patio/deck seating areas. Heron Lakes architectural styles include mountain or modern mountain/rustic, Colorado mine, craftsman and more! We allow for a diverse blend of attractive styles that create a uniformed feel throughout our entire community. As phases have developed, we have several sections to our community (Northern Lights, The Peninsula, The Rookery) and standards are held throughout. Review our full design guides on our Building at Heron Lakes page if you are interested to learn more.

Architectural Styles and How they Relate to Existing Home Styles in Heron Lakes, How Each Team Brought Recreation Into Their Outdoor Space + WHO WON the Exterior Space!

Design consistency throughout a home and a community is important. With how beautiful of an area Berthoud is, it's important that a home is bold and unique, but it needs to blend into the environment where the home sits. In Heron Lakes, we have three massive reservoirs that travel throughout our community and create these amazing micro sections that extend through the water and are surrounded on two-three sides. In the extended views you have green, lush grasslands extending to mountains higher and higher the farther west your eye travels and up to the peaks of Mount Meeker and Longs Peak. Ty Pennington mentioned this episode that Colorado holds the highest percentage of residents who are active outdoors at 92% of the population, so each team was challenged to incorporate a recreational element into the outdoors of their homes. Heron Lakes boasts over 8 miles of maintained trails, 4.5 miles of shoreline, a lake club for boating and fishing, a massive fitness center, resort pool and more! Here is a look at each team's architectural style and how it blends from indoors out and a look at how each team added this surprise element that will be very welcomed to an individual looking to build a custom life in Heron Lakes.

Jon and Kristina | Team Farmhouse Fixer: The chosen architectural style for this team is obviously a Modern Farmhouse. The design trend is very popular in our area, but we do feel that the organic twist and classic Kristina touches of the deep green and blended darks indoors created an interesting view of this style. The dark paint and stain extended to each level and space, indoors and out, seamlessly. Transitioning to the exterior of their home, Jon and Kristina kept with this dark theme with board and batten siding, dark wood and a light stone front to contrast. This was a risk on their part this week because like mentioned this week on the episode, you don't happen to see a lot of black homes in Colorado. With that said, the way that they styled the back of the home with the light color stone moving through to the second level of the house and light wood exterior accents are genius. It offers the same look and feel to their Modern Farmhouse home but blends in the elements of Colorado to balance the darkness. The recreational element to this home of a bocce ball court worked well for the level lot which their home sits and is creative. We can name a few existing residents in Heron Lakes who have a bocce court on their properties already!

Page and Mitch | Team Fix My Flip: Team Fix My Flip's chosen architectural style is Alpine Chic. Similar to Jon and Kristina, Page and Mitch adopted a black exterior that has caught popularity as an edgy urban trend in the last few years. While it's not popular in Colorado or our direct community, this difference truly stands out and that is what curb appeal is all about. When you look at the back of this home in contrast to the darkness of the front elevation, you almost wouldn't expect to see this very light stone coverage that travels up about halfway through the second level and light wood and how well the transition works when you do a complete 360 of the home. When we think alpine design in Colorado, you think of a luxury mountain finishes with cozy living spaces, loads of fireplaces and of course classic adirondack ski chairs and this team had it all! The added recreational element to this home was life-sized chess in the backyard which will offer fun for an entire family to enjoy.

Michel and Anthony | Team Luxe for Less: Mountain Modern is the chosen architectural style by Team Luxe for Less and in true expectations from this team, their home is just as dramatic as the offered scenery. One word that has stuck out to us this season from Michel Boyd is "narrative”. This team is taking on a full narrative throughout their home that tells the story of contemporary mountain living with amenities galore still accessible. The exterior of the home blends light colored wood siding with white cement, grey brick and dark colored awnings over larger windows. The way that they mixed so many color variations and textures remind us of the Rocky Mountains and a home that would be sitting right off a ski resort. One thing we wanted to mention from this week in the lower-level patio is the high double-sided fireplace. The judges felt that the height of the fireplace might be a concern blocking the mountain views, but we can't help but love the added privacy that it gives this space and how it blends the stone from the back of the house. The surprise dual-purpose rock wall and outdoor amphitheater were brilliant and gives a modern amenity that will be enjoyed on warm Colorado nights.

Bryan and Sarah | Team Renovation Island: We are so excited that we had to start with a massive spoiler and congratulations to Canadian couple, The Baeumlers, on their win this week! Team Renovation Island's chosen architectural style is Aspen Chalet and this team accomplished that beautifully with functionality always kept in mind. When you look at the front exterior of the home your eyes are drawn directly to the lighted address stone and the lightness in color of materials used. The exterior of the home blends a light natural wood against a blended white and grey stone and white siding for a very clean and cohesive feel. Bryan's comment this episode was that "natural elements are never going out of style," and in Colorado we will always agree with this! This stone feel was continued throughout the whole entire exterior on the back of the home and both levels of seating areas on the upstairs deck and lower patio. This natural continuation led this team to build a large firepit seating area with Colorado red rock that will be the highlight of the backyard when entertaining! The design surprise for this group was well executed and very Colorado with a parkour course that could work for children play or as this visual art element that blends with their swing chair.

Each Rock the Block home fit well into our Heron Lakes community and the lifestyle that you can have here in Berthoud, Colorado. There has been so much detail and heart poured into these homes, and the long and hard nights worked have been well worth it as you will see next week on the finale episode. We cannot wait to finally find out who the winner of Season Four, Rock the Block will be and who will have "The Block's" street sign named in their honor to forever commemorate their win in Heron Lakes. We are looking forward to watching live with our community at the final watch party of #RockTheBlockColorado!
